It involves knowledge techniques for machine learning, software proficiency, pattern recognition, statistics, database linguistics, visualisation and data analysis to discover patterns, regularities, change, and anomalies.

It allows organizations to detect fraud or identify and evaluate risk. It secures information that allows managers to make informed decisions or simply confirm or negate perceptions and move forward using identifiable sources for referral.
